Councilman Chaim Deutsch started his career in public service by founding the Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol in 1991. Over the years, he developed the organization into the well-respected entity it is today, working alongside the NYPD to tackle local crime and keep our streets safe.
Prior to his election to the New York City Council in 2013, Chaim worked as a constituent liaison for Councilman Lloyd Henry and then as Chief of Operations for Councilman Michael Nelson.
When Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012, Chaim sprang into action, mobilizing community-based volunteers to evacuate waterfront residents and coordinate the distribution of necessities for people who had lost their homes and possessions in the storm. With the help of volunteers and organizations like COJO of Flatbush, Chaim collected and handed out thousands of blankets, heaters, baby goods, household items, and articles of clothing for those who were displaced by the storm. He was a familiar sight in waterfront neighborhoods during those difficult weeks, passing out hot meals three times a day to residents without electricity.
As the representative of the 48th District, Councilman Deutsch has been a tireless advocate for our community. He has fought for resources for our children’s schools, protection and services for our seniors, safer streets, cleaner business districts, and so much more. Councilman Deutsch is known as the go-to official, available at all hours of the day and night to assist constituents in navigating the bureaucratic red tape and in times of crisis. He has been at the forefront of programs like #GetAlarmedNYC, a campaign to outfit every home in New York City with a smoke alarm. He worked closely with the NYPD to establish online access to collision reports for those involved in a vehicular accident.
Councilman Deutsch has allocated millions of dollars to local parks and schools, as well as to non-profit organizations in the South Brooklyn area. He also designated funding for resources for local Sanitation garages and police precincts, to ensure that they are equipped with the proper tools to keep our streets safe and clean.
Councilman Deutsch has been married to his wife Sara for 28 years. They have five children and two adorable grandchildren.
